Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) (IEC-61000-4-2)
The problem of protecting equipment against the discharge of static electricity has gained considerable importance for manufacturers and users. The extensive use of microelectronic components has emphasized the need to define the aspects of the problem and to seek a solution to enhance products/system reliability. The problem of static electricity accumulation and subsequent discharges becomes more relevant for uncontrolled environments and the widespread application of equipment and systems. Equipment may also be subjected to electromagnetic energies whenever discharges occur from personnel to nearby objects. Additionally, discharges can occur between metal objects, such as chairs and tables, in the proximity of equipment. It is considered that the tests described in this standard adequately simulate the effects of the latter phenomenon. The effects of the operator discharge can be a simple malfunction of the equipment or damage of electronic components. The necessity to have a tool to assist in the prevention of undesirable effects due to the discharge of static electricity on equipment, have initiated the development of the standard testing procedure described in IEC-61000-4-2
The IEC/EN 61000-4-2 EMC standard is about immunity testing (measurement techniques) against electrostatic discharge (ESD). This standard is part of the Basic EMC Publications. IEC 61000-4-2 specifies immunity to electrostatic discharge (ESD) from operating personnel and from neighbouring objects. The standard defines requirements, test methods and test levels. The purpose of IEC 61000-4-2 is to establish a general and reproducible basis for the determination of the performance of electrical and/or electronic equipment when exposed to ESD. It also includes discharges of static electricity from persons to objects near the equipment under test discharges of static electricity from persons to objects near the equipment under test.
