EN 55024 CISPR 24
Radio disturbance characteristics & limits and methods of measurement for Information Technology Equipment (ITE)
EN 55024 is a derivative of CISPR 24 and applies to information technology equipment (ITE). EN 55024 specifies the immunity test requirements for ITE in relation to continuous and transient conducted and radiated disturbances. Tests within the standard include Electrical Fast Transients (EFT), Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), Electrostatic Discharges (ESD), Surge, Power Frequency Magnetic Fields and Power interruptions.
The standard outlines conditions that will provide an acceptable level of intrinsic immunity so that the equipment will operate as intended in its intended environment. EN55024 specifies the test requirements which are applied on a port by port approach, with ports being defined and described within the standard. The ports include the overall enclosure, AC Power, DC Power, Earth, Signal, and Telecommunication ports.
Compliance with EN 55024 gives partial presumption of conformity with the European EMC Directive, 2004/108/EC. Most products also require assessment to the emissions companion standard EN 55022, for the measurement of the levels of spurious signals generated by the ITE. Information Technology Equipment (ITE), as would be tested for EN 55024, may include:
- Central processing units (CPUs) and all related features and peripheral units, including processor storage, console devices, channel devices, etc.
- Minicomputers, midrange computers, microcomputers and personal computers and all peripheral units associated with such computers.
- Input-output (peripheral) units (off-line or on-line) including: terminals, card readers, optical character readers, magnetic tape units, mass storage devices, card punches, printers, computer output to microform converters (COM), video display units, data entry devices, teletypes, teleprinters, plotters, scanners, or any device used as a terminal to a computer and control units for these devices.
- Special purpose systems including word processing, Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), photo composition, typesetting and electronic bookkeeping.
- Communication devices used for transmission of data such as: modems, data sets, multiplexors, concentrators, routers, switches, local area networks, private branch exchanges, network control equipment, or digital components of microwave or satellite communications systems.

The prefix “EN” stands for “European Norm” which are written by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The vast majority of ENs that are relevant for the EMC Directive are produced by the CENELEC.
Harmonized standards are European Norms produced by CEN, CENELEC or ETSI. This is following a mandate issued by the European Commission for use with one or more directives. The lists of harmonized standards suitable for each Directive are published from periodically in an official publication called the Official Journal of the European Union, often referred to as “the OJ”.
The date of publication (dop) for an EN standard is commonly 6 months from the date of availability (dav), while the date the standard becomes mandatory is its date of withdrawal (DOW).
